FROM THE EDITOR

WHERE WE BEGIN

Ayisha

This is the first one. There is no back catalogue behind it, no house style to inherit, nothing to live up to except what we decide to put on the page.

I left the platforms because the platforms had started deciding what I was for. A feed rewards you for being the same thing every day. A magazine does the opposite - it asks what you have to say this month, and then gives you the room to say it properly.

So this is that room. Some issues will be mostly photographs. Some will be mostly words. This one is a little of both, because it is the first and I wanted you to see the range.

Thank you for being here at the start of it.

THE NEW

STANDARD

Confidence, power, presence - three words that get printed on a lot of things. Here is what they actually cost.

Confidence is the one everybody wants and nobody wants to pay for. It is not a mood and it does not arrive. It is what is left over after you have been wrong in public and carried on anyway.

Presence is not the loudest thing in the room. It is the thing the room arranges itself around.

Power is quieter than it looks from outside. Most of it is the ability to say no to things that would have been fine. The work is in the refusals nobody sees, not in the yeses everybody does.

The standard is not perfection. Perfection is a way of never being judged. The standard is showing up as the same person in the rooms where it is easy and the rooms where it is not.

THE

NEXT ERA

Global icon, global impact, global legacy. Three lines on a cover, and the only one of them that is not decided by other people is the last.

An icon is a thing that happens to you. Impact is a thing you can chase. Legacy is the only one you build on purpose, and it is built out of what you were still doing after the attention moved somewhere else.

That is the plan here. Not a moment. A body of work, made in public, one issue at a time.

ICONIC

BY NATURE

Effortless. Unapologetic. Unmatched. On the discipline hiding underneath the word effortless.

Nobody is effortless. The word describes an audience's experience, not a performer's. What you are looking at when something reads as effortless is a very large amount of work that has been finished early enough to stop showing.

Effortless is a compliment paid to people whose effort you were not invited to watch.

Unapologetic is the harder one, because it gets confused with rude. It is not. It is simply declining to add the small apology that women in particular are taught to attach to every sentence - the sorry that makes a request easier for everyone except the person making it.

Unmatched is the one to be careful with. Nobody stays unmatched. The people who last are not the ones who were never caught, they are the ones who kept working after they were.

So: effortless where it counts, unapologetic where it matters, and quietly aware that unmatched has a shelf life. That is the whole trick, and it is not much of a secret.

BEYOND

INFLUENCE

Building a legacy that transcends trending - and why the follower count was never the asset.

Influence is rented. Every follower on every platform belongs to the platform, and any of them can change the terms overnight and take the audience with it. Anyone who has built something on rented ground knows the feeling of the ground moving.

A trend borrows an audience. A body of work keeps one.

The alternative is not glamorous. It is owning the thing directly - the site, the list, the archive, the words - and accepting that it grows more slowly because nothing is being handed to you by an algorithm that wants you addicted.

What you get for that patience is permanence. A trend borrows an audience for as long as the trend lasts. A body of work keeps one, because people return to things that were made for them rather than for the feed.

This magazine is the first brick of that. It is not on anybody else's platform, it cannot be deprioritised, and it will still be here in five years. That is the entire point of it.
